A coach and selected student athletes called “Squad Leaders” lead the program. The program materials are completely scripted and easy to follow. Little or no preparation is needed. There are 10 sessions for ATLAS. Each session lasts 45 minutes. Sessions are typically scheduled once per week during the season on a “light” practice day. Coaches facilitate the program, keep athletes on task, and introduce and wrap up student-led activities. Squad Leaders provide a majority of the instruction for their small group of teammates. Sessions include role-plays, student-created campaigns or public service announcements and instructional, interactive games. Athletes practice goal setting and self-monitoring of nutrition behaviors. Students learn attitudes and skills that will help them make healthy choices in sports and throughout their lives. Awareness and educational efforts are working to help prevent anabolic steroid abuse in schools and communities. The Adolescents Training and Learning to Avoid Steroids (ATLAS) and the Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise and Nutrition Alternatives (ATHENA) programs, funded by the NIDA, and supported by the Oregon Health & Science University programs is teaching athletes that they do not need steroids to build powerful muscles and improve athletic performance. These programs provide weight-training and nutrition alternatives, increase healthy behaviors, less likelihood to try steroids, and less likelihood to engage in other dangerous behaviors such as drinking and driving, use of marijuana and alcohol , and and improved body image. Bother Congress and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration endorsed these model prevention programs. 4

The athletes using steroids are always at risk of getting tested positive for using anabolic steroids, which are legally prohibited for sports use. These athletes can get life ban or some other penalties slapped on them. There are a number of instances when athletes using steroids, getting tested positive for doping, are made to quit sports for life. The Canadian sprinter, Ben Johnson has to lose his gold when he failed doping test. Johnson’s urine samples were found containing Stanozolol. He was banned for two year, in 1993 again, he was found guilty of doping at a race in Montreal and was subsequently banned from the sport for life.
